Economic growth came to a halt and the income of families decreased. Everyone was poorer than they were before. A poor person was described as someone who did not have color TVs, VCRs, washing machines and microwaves. These things were considered luxuries for the common person in the 1970's and 1980's. The 1970's and 1980's were not as tough as the 1930's and 1960's. The Vietnam war was in progress during the 1970's and people were being employed faster than normal but the impoverished rate was higher. This happened because the government employed many people to go fight in the war therefore, more jobs opened up for women and women with children. The poverty rate increased because the males stopped providing for the family and there was one less person to help around the house.
